Bones and Brews in Beautiful Bozeman

Bones and Brews in Beautiful Bozeman

Maybe I’m odd.  But some of the places I’ve enjoyed most on this trip are the ones I’ve come across accidentally, the ones that I had no expectations of, that weren’t even on my radar at the start.  That oddness seems to have made me find Mount Rushmore simply adequate, and to blow through Yellowstone in a day because there were too many people, but spend two days in Bozeman, Montana because I really liked the people.  Go figure.  Odd. I…

Yellowstone National Park (Alternatively: How Faithful is Old Faithful?)

Yellowstone National Park (Alternatively: How Faithful is Old Faithful?)

I had made the conscious decision to spend only one day seeing the sites of Yellowstone, mainly because of the number of people, but I clearly could have spent much more time there.  All camp sites were booked out, so I wasn’t going to be able to stay in the park overnight either, although if I had booked ahead, I think I would have liked spending a week there and getting to some of the more remote locations.   I left Cody…

The Cody ‘Nite’ Rodeo

The Cody ‘Nite’ Rodeo

Another big bucket list kind of place that I wanted to visit on this trip was Yellowstone National Park, in western Wyoming.  It was getting late in the day on my drive there when I approached Cody, WY, so I decided to spend the night there and start into Yellowstone in the morning.  But what do you do in the evening when you’re in Cody?  That’s Cody, as in Buffalo Bill Cody, and this is apparently where he had his wild…

Bighorn Canyon (Alternatively: All the Pretty Horses)

Bighorn Canyon (Alternatively: All the Pretty Horses)

Leaving the Little Bighorn Battlefield, I worked my way back south westerly, and discovered Bighorn Canyon and the Yellowtail Dam.  The drive there was through more of the grasslands of eastern Montana, and a lot of farming there seems to be centered around making hay. Bighorn Canyon was quite pretty, and considering that I had never even heard of the dam, it turned out to be really significant. Along with eleven other dams, it forms part of the Pick-Sloan Missouri…

Little Bighorn Battlefield

Little Bighorn Battlefield

I visited the battlefield of Little Bighorn because I’ve heard of “Custer’s last stand” all my life, but only vaguely remembered the details from my school history classes.  I had generally planned to head west again from Devil’s Tower, but Little Bighorn was only about two hours out of my way, and two more back, and a four hour detour has really become no big deal for me on this trip! Going to the visitor’s center there, I was just…
