South Burying Place, Concord, MA (18July2016)

It may seem a bit odd, but while wandering around in the quaint town of Concord this afternoon, I ended up spending a lot of time in an old cemetery there, as far as I could tell called simply the South Burying Place.  Perhaps I was feeling pensive, but I wanted to give some time and thought to these people who lived long ago and who, for the most part, are forgotten now.  I imagine that the events of their lives, their worries and loves, were just as important to them as ours are to us today.

The stones are difficult to read in some cases, so I’ve transcribed the inscription.  I made no attempt to capture the incredibly erratic capitalization and punctuation, but tried to preserve the interesting spelling.

  1. Old cemeteries are powerful places to spend some time in most cases – particularly as you see how many died so young one minute and then marvel at those that lived to an old age. I could only imagine the feeling for an American walking through such a place, knowing that those that lay there saw or were apart of the start of the War American Independence.
